Mount Bromo
Friday, May 11, we woke at 2:30 AM at a hotel on the edge of the Tengger Caldera. A Guide took us in a Toyota Land Cruiser down into the Caldera, across the Sand Sea and up Mount Penanjakan (9,088' elev.). Surprisingly, there was a huge crowd at this hour of the morning with over 600 Land Cruisers making the climb. Even though we were only about 6 degrees (500 miles) from the equator, it was pretty cold (you can see people wearing winter coats and hats). The sunrise photos were taken from this vantage point.
After the sunrise, the Land Cruiser took us back down to the Sand Sea, where we took a horseback ride to a huge staircase at the base of Mount Bromo, which is the smoking volcano in the middle of the caldera. After climbing the stairs, and taking pictures, we were once again on our way
